THE national soccer team’s dream to make a maiden appearance at the World Cup starts this weekend when the Herve Renard drilled lads lock horns with the Pharaohs of Egypt in Cairo in a joint Africa/World Cup qualifying game. This game is critical for Zambia and the lads know and that is why they should not even relax. The adage that the first cut is the deepest should definitely be applied in this must-win match because this game will determine Zambia’s chances of qualifying to the World Cup.
The other teams in Group C are Algeria and Rwanda.

Drogba open to Blues talks |

Didier Drogba’s agent insists his client would be willing to discuss a possible contract extension at Chelsea. Thierno Seydi claims the Ivorian striker is prepared to snub a host of big-money offers from across Europe in order to remain at Stamford Bridge. The 30-year-old had appeared destined to leave the Blues this summer after falling out of favour under Luiz Felipe Scolari’s regime. However, he has been brought back into the fold by interim boss Guus Hiddink and has been in breathtaking form of late. |

FOR a long time now Zambia has waited in vain to discover a sensational scoring machine at the highest level. The big question is; when will one be found? Or to put it the other way round, has one been found already? Following Zanaco’s Given Singuluma’s recent good scoring form for the Zambia ‘B’ team or CHAN (African Nations Championship) squad, almost everyone has gone ballistic that Singuluma has given us that ray of hope, that he is most certainly the newly-discovered goal-getter messiah. I would rather play the game of wait and see and for good reasons too; I have profusely watched Zambian football since 1970 to date.

Zanaco Football Club coach Wedson Nyirenda says his team stands a chance of winning the FAZ/KCM premier league title this season. Zanaco recovered from their 2-1 first league match defeat to Power Dynamos on March 14 after thrashing Young Arrows 3-1 in their week two fixture at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka last weekend.
“We can lose a league game but not the championship; we did not play a bad game in our first game against Power Dynamos in Kitwe. We were just unfortunate to concede those goals and we will continue to do better,” he said. |

FAZ/KCM Division One South outfit Lusaka Tigers coach Philemon Chilembi says his team is capable of winning promotion to the premier league as long as it continues with the same commitment shown in the first game of the season played last week-end. The team beat Zamcoal Diggers 2-1 in the league season opener and Chilembi said recording an away victory was the best way of starting the league.

THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) says the women’s football league will start next month. Communications officer Erick Mwanza said in an interview that the local football governing body had delayed to start the league because it was trying to address some concerns raised on the matter. Mwanza said that apart from the women league, the amateur leagues were also affected, adding that one of the major reasons was that only few teams had registered with the association so far. Mwanza said that it was a serious cause of concern, adding that the association would be able to resolve the issue to ensure the leagues started running in a few week’s time. “We are also concerned as FAZ but the women’s league is not the only league that is affected, the amateur leagues have not started,” he said.Adding:

Arrows silenced their Nigeria opponents in the first round first leg encounter played at Nkoloma stadium with two first half classic goals from striker, Timothy Mbewe and defender, Richard Phiri in the third and 30th minutes respectively. Coach Matthews Phiri admitted that it would be tough to contend with the West Africans in the away encounter but added that his team was capable of beating them in Nigeria.
