Can Chipolopolo shoot The Pharaohs? PDF Print E-mail

 Harvey Renard
THE national soccer team’s dream to make a maiden appearance at the World Cup starts this weekend when the Herve Renard drilled lads lock horns with the Pharaohs of Egypt in Cairo in a joint Africa/World Cup qualifying game.

This game is critical for Zambia and the lads know and that is why they should not even relax. The adage that the first cut is the deepest should definitely be applied in this must-win match because this game will determine Zambia’s chances of qualifying to the World Cup.

The other teams in Group C are Algeria and Rwanda.

  Drogba open to Blues talks
Didier Drogba’s agent insists his client would be willing to discuss a possible contract extension at Chelsea. Thierno Seydi claims the Ivorian striker is prepared to snub a host of big-money offers from across Europe in order to remain at Stamford Bridge.

The 30-year-old had appeared destined to leave the Blues this summer after falling out of favour under Luiz Felipe Scolari’s regime. However, he has been brought back into the fold by interim boss Guus Hiddink and has been in breathtaking form of late.

Harrington-Heat is off PDF Print E-mail

Dubliner hoping to get back to ‘a sort of normality’

Open champion Padraig Harrington is pleased to have shed some of the limelight after his stellar achievements of last summer. The Dubliner won back-to back majors at the Open and USPGA and became the hottest property in golf. That produced pressures - and commitments - that inevitably led to a dip in form. But the emergence of Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and the return to action of Tiger Woods has taken the pressure off him and Harrington admitted: “It’s been a big bonus. “Tiger is back, Phil (Mickelson) has been great, which has obviously taken huge amounts of the media attention in the US, and Rory McIlroy coming on the scene has taken a good bit of the attention at home, so it’s all the better for me. “That makes me better able tomanage my own time and cope with what I’m doing. “The attention is less when other things are happening. That’s all good in terms of my preparation and lets me get back to sort of normality in how I prepare.”

As for his form heading towards next month’s Masters, Harrington added: “Ideally, if I were to be absolutely competitive and sharp, I’d probably have played 15 events by this stage, and that’s not going to happen because I’ll be worn out and burnt out by the PGA in August. “I’ll have played seven or eight events going into the Masters, which I hope is enough. Maybe if I had played three or four more, it would be better, but I know I can’t do that. “I’m hoping to be ready for the Masters, but I’m also hoping not to burn myself out by the end of the PGA.

“There are a lot of balls in the air that have to be juggled to make sure you perform throughout the year and not just make short-term sacrifices that could cost you later.” Harrington was beaten by Pat Perez in the first round of the WGC Accenture Match Play last month and finished joint 20th the following week at Doral. “I’ve been home for the last week doing a little bit of practice,” Harrington added. “Doral the week before was exactly what I needed in terms of going out on the golf course and seeing where my game was at and working on a few things on the course. “I still have a few issues - I definitely drove the ball poorly in Doral - but last week was a very positive week going forward.” This week Harrington will tee it up at the Arnold Palmer invitational at Bay Hill in Florida. Is Singuluma For Real PDF Print E-mail
FOR a long time now Zambia has waited in vain to discover a sensational scoring machine at the highest level. The big question is; when will one be found? Or to put it the other way round, has one been found already? Following Zanaco’s Given Singuluma’s recent good scoring form for the Zambia ‘B’ team or CHAN (African Nations Championship) squad, almost everyone has gone ballistic that Singuluma has given us that ray of hope, that he is most certainly the newly-discovered goal-getter messiah. I would rather play the game of wait and see and for good reasons too; I have profusely watched Zambian football since 1970 to date.

FAZ/KCM premier league side Nakambala Leopards says it should not be underrated or regarded as underdogs by any team in the premier league.Commenting on the team’s away draw with Magnificent Kabwe Warriors in the season opener, club secretary Obert Habasimbi said in an interview that football has now changed and there was nothing like underdogs. “We should not be regarded as underdogs or being underrated in the premier league because we are also capable of playing well. This is not our first time that we are playing in the league competition. This is our second time,” he said.Habasimbi attributed the team’s away draw to Warriors to hard work and coordination among the players and the technical bench.“We forced an away draw because our boys played well and the technical bench did all it could,” he added. And on the engagement of new assistant coach Ernest Kofi who is a Brazilian, Habasimbi said that there was need to give him time because he has just been with the team for two weeks.“I can’t say much on the assistant coach because he has just been with the team for two weeks only. But I believe he will also add impact to the team,” he said.

Zanaco Football Club coach - Wedson Nyirenda

Zanaco Football Club coach Wedson Nyirenda says his team stands a chance of winning the FAZ/KCM premier league title this season. Zanaco recovered from their 2-1 first league match defeat to Power Dynamos on March 14 after thrashing Young Arrows 3-1 in their week two fixture at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka last weekend.

“We can lose a league game but not the championship; we did not play a bad game in our first game against Power Dynamos in Kitwe. We were just unfortunate to concede those goals and we will continue to do better,” he said.

Zambia’s false political crisis

There will be many reasons for people to disagree. In fact, disagreeing is a very normal thing in life. The right to dissent, although not recognised as such per se, is a fundamental requirement in any functional society – particularly, that which espouses democracy.

We want to take this opportunity to argue that the right to dissent does not necessarily mean the right to anarchy, a vice that few of our people, with a chain of qualifications in deception boast of.   Read More...
